Chocolate Gravy

Chocolate Gravy and Biscuits
I just finished off a plateful of Saveur 100's #48 - Chocolate Gravy with biscuits. It was hard for me to imagine a breakfast that combined a rich, velvety, buttery chocolate sauce as a component (unless I were a 5 year-old), so when I first saw the recipe I was intrigued.

In our home savory has ruled as the Queen of Breakfast and every one of my 7 children knows that I don't embrace the idea of chocolate or sugar as the first meal of the day. But, the recommendation did come from Saveur, and the woman who submitted it is from the South, so I figured it had to be good. And I was right. And I apologize to my children for denying them chocolate for breakfast for so long.

I think I'm in love - the dark chocolate sauce on top of flaky biscuits is nearly sinful. I'm not sure I should have been making it for Sunday breakfast. I did, though - and I don't apologize for it. If you've never had chocolate gravy for breakfast, please do go and make up a batch - you can find the recipe at Saveur.

My mom made this for us once in a while when we were kids! I'd forgotten all about it.

I would have no problem with this AT ALL. See, I've been known to order chocolate chip pancakes where I can get them for breakfast! Sinful? Bring it on!

My kids would be all over chocolate for breakfast. For at least one of my kids, it's the most favored food group.

My MIL made these for my husband when he was growing up - now she makes it for my kids when she comes to visit. We all love it - guess growing up in the north had it's disadvantages (for me). ;-) Thanks for sharing this, most people have never heard of it.

I've seen recipes like this before and always wondered how chocolate and biscuits would taste together. Would it be worth it to sweeten the biscuits up a little?

Don't feel bad for denying your children chocolate for breakfast. I only have 2 kids and I am a wreck if they get all sugared up in the morning. Mamma needs some coffee and quiet for a while! I bet these were amazing though and perhaps worth the couple of hours of zany children?
